Two local students, Andrew Osychenko and Cameron Cairney, have been awarded scholarships with the Institute of Law, Jersey’s centre for legal research and learning.
These scholarships, up to the value of £8,000, will support the winners with their studies on the prestigious University of London Law Degree programme, taught at the Institute of Law. The Institute is a not-for-profit organisation and this year’s scholarships have been possible through the support of the Institute’s Endowment Trust and the generosity of individual sponsors.
Andrew moved to Jersey in 2017 from Ukraine. He said: “Despite my educational background, like many immigrants my first jobs in Jersey were of a very basic nature but, in 2019, I finally realised my ambition and enrolled with the Institute of Law in Jersey to study for a degree. This scholarship is a lifesaver. I am delighted and extremely grateful to the Trust for this award. Without it, I would have had to abandon my dreams of becoming a lawyer”.
Cameron, the other recipient, is working at a local law firm. He said: “I began to worry that I wouldn’t be able to progress my career but scholarships such as the one offered by the Institute have allowed me to take the next step and work towards a future in the legal profession. Having the financial support of the Institute behind me allows me to approach this year with more confidence and gives me the chance not only to obtain a degree, but also to forge a future for myself”.
Commenting on the awards, Professor Janine Griffiths-Baker, Chief Executive and Dean of the Institute of Law said: “These competitive scholarships are given to applicants who can not only demonstrate outstanding potential for academic success but who also can show how the award would make a significant difference to their lives. My sincere thanks to the Institute’s Endowment Trust and our individual sponsors for making these scholarships possible and, of course, many congratulations to both our winners”.
