ArtHouse Jersey, in partnership with the Creative Island Partnership and Jersey Markets is inviting proposals for a Jersey-based artist (or collective of artists) to take up a studio residency in the markets in St Helier.
The residency will be for a period of approximately 12 weeks between January andApril 2025. The residency will culminate in the creation and installation of a new artwork of any artform, though with a strong visual art component, for the Central Market of a temporary or semi-permanent duration.
The residency includes exclusive use of a large unit in the Beresford Street Fish Market for a period of 12 weeks between January – April 2025. This temporary artist(s)’ studio should be open at least 4 days a week (during the Fish Market’s regular opening hours) for the public to view the artistic process towards the making of the installed artwork.
The specific themes or content of the artwork are open – and may for example reflect the living history of the site, its current use by Jersey’s diverse communities as well as more speculative projections that look towards the future.
The artwork to be displayed in the Central Market should be created during the period of the residency. The specific installation requirements and location of the artwork in the Market will be discussed with ArtHouse Jersey and the Jersey Markets during the period of the residency as the project takes shape.
The residency is a funded opportunity and will cover a set artists fee, materials and installation costs. ArtHouse Jersey will support the artist through the making and installation process, including to support communications and publicity as appropriate for the selected project.
Head of Programme for ArtHouse Jersey, James Tyson, said: “ArtHouse Jersey is delighted to be working with Jersey Markets and the Creative Island Partnership to provide this valuable opportunity both to provide a space for artists as well as enabling the creation of a new artwork at this much loved location at the heart of St Helier’s town centre. Studio space for artists is such a valuable entity that can bring life, colour and diversity to urban spaces so it’s wonderful that the Jersey Markets in line with the Creative Island Arts Strategy has responded so positively to this initiative.”
Sector Officer for Retail and Visitor Economy at Government of Jersey, Charlotte Howe, said: “This opportunity has the potential to transform the market experience into one that sparks curiosity and invites exploration. It will inevitably encourage visitors to slow down, appreciate the surroundings and see the markets as not just a place to buy their favourite goods but a vibrant hub for inspiration and community.”
Artists can apply online at with the closing date being midnight on 1 December 2024.
