Jersey’s new Lieutenant Governor has become patron of Jersey Cheshire Home.
His Excellency Vice Admiral Jerry Kyd CBE (pictured) lends his support at an exciting time as the Home celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2023.
Admiral Kyd who has served as an Officer in the Royal Navy for 37 years, and most recently served as the fleet Commander, the Royal Navy’s most senior Warfare Officer and second-in-command to the First Sea Lord assumed the role of Lieutenant Governor on 8th October 2022.
Outside of his military service, Admiral Kyd has supported and held a number of voluntary roles with charitable organisations.
Donna Abel, CEO Jersey Cheshire Home said: “We are thrilled that His Excellency has accepted the position of patron. We welcome his involvement with the Home and look forward to celebrating our 40th anniversary with him and of course our residents, staff and the wider community this year.”
The Home has a number of exciting events and initiatives planned to mark its big birthday including a big Ruby Anniversary Ball on 15th July at the Royal Yacht Hotel.
The team hope 40 corporate sponsors will get involved and sponsor some themed events planned at the Home this year including St Patrick’s Day, Liberation Day and Madeira Day to name just a few.
In addition to this they are asking individuals to pledge £40 each this year and help them raise £400,000 to mark this incredible milestone and which will go towards their mission of enhancing lives and supporting islanders with disabilities.
Several treks have been organised in 2023 with something to suit everyone, including the National 3 Peaks Challenge over three days in May, for those looking for adventure further afield, trekkers can experience two extremes in just five days learning how to survive the jungle in Borneo before summiting South-East Asia’s highest mountain, Mount Kinabalu at 4,095m.
The five-day Mount Olympus Challenge in September will see islanders setting off to conquer the highest peak in Greece at 2,917m and discover the mystical home of the ancient Greek Gods.
And closer to home they hope islanders will get out and about and ‘Step into Spring’ with a walking challenge. Walking 40 miles over spring for those who can’t.
Meanwhile some of the residents are planning on taking on their own personal challenges with a ‘40’ theme, to raise money for an electric vehicle. Some waking 40 steps, swimming 40 lengths, cycling 40 miles or learning new skills such as growing a sunflower, calligraphy and guitar playing.
Jersey Cheshire Home is the only residential facility on the island caring solely for adults with disabilities. More information on all the events and activities planned for the 40th anniversary can be found here.
