At 11am on 11th November and also on Remembrance Sunday, Jersey’s Royal British Legion are asking the public to take the time to pause, and pay respects to our Armed Forces community, past and present.
Red poppies are sold each year in the build-up to the day to commemorate the war dead, while the nation will fall silent at 11am in tribute of the armistice that brought the end of WW1.
This weekend also marks Remembrance Sunday, when people across the UK honour those who have lost their lives in war. It is held on the second Sunday in November, while Armistice Day is always held on the eleventh day of the eleventh month to commemorate the signing of the armistice.
The Royal British Legion in Jersey is encouraging the local community to give generously in order to raise vital funds to help the Armed Forces community.
Donations made to the Royal British Legion, Jersey stay in the island and help ensure that every member of the local Armed Forces community receive the support they need. From finance and careers advice to rehabilitation courses and care homes for older veterans, the Royal British Legion has been supporting Service men and women, veterans and their families since 1921.
Islanders can visit the pop-up Poppy Shop at 77 King Street, opposite WH Smith, for a range of Poppy Appeal merchandise, including locally made scented candles and flower-pot decorating kits.
The Jersey Treasury have kindly donated five Centenary Remembrance Coins which are being raffled with all proceeds going to the Poppy Appeal. Tickets cost £10 and are available for purchase in the Poppy Shop. The familiar metal badges can also be purchased, which highlight the service given to the Island by the Field Squadron – our local Militia – who have kept us safe for almost 700 years.
Organiser of the Jersey Poppy Appeal, Alison Opfermann said: “All the proceeds from the poppy merchandise go towards funding the Legion’s ongoing work in supporting the Armed Forces community in Jersey, serving and ex-serving personnel and their families.” She added: “As well as our pop-up Poppy Shop, you can also find our paper poppies across the Island. Please look out for retailers who will be raising vital funds for the Poppy Appeal.”
Tim Daniels, Chairman of The Royal British Legion, Jersey said: “The Royal British Legion has been supporting the armed forces for 100 years now. There are many ex-service people in our community who need your support, so please buy a poppy. It’s a simple way to show our gratitude for the service and sacrifice of our military.”
Islanders are being encouraged to donate by scanning the QR codes on the Poppy Appeal tins, making payments a lot easier, and online here.
