A special match in memory of a long-term Les Amis service user was played at this year’s Kick-on for Les Amis – a five-a-side football tournament which raised over £10,300.
Hacquoil & Cook (pictured) were crowned the 2024 champions in this friendly but fierce contest of 20 workplace teams for the coveted Kick on for Les Amis Trophy.
This year’s tournament featured an exhibition match in memory of Wendy Cobden who sadly passed away. A keen football fan, Manchester United supporter and member of Les Amis’ Oil Recycling Team, Wendy loved playing in the tournament last year as part of ‘Les Amis FC’. A friendly match was played at this year’s tournament between a Jersey Wanderers side and ‘The Wendys’, a team made up of Les Amis’ staff and friends. The winners were presented with the Cobden Cup by Wendy’s dad.
Yenni Kusumo, Les Amis’ Head of Charitable Income & Partnerships said: “This year’s tournament held a special place in the hearts of all of us at Les Amis. We are so grateful to all the teams who entered and competed with such style, energy and passion and to those who made this much-loved tournament happen. Wendy would have loved it!
“Working with Worksafe Jersey and IPOP Digital on this fun fundraiser for a second year has been a pleasure – a great example of community and corporate partnership in action. Could we make it a hat-trick and kick on again for Les Amis’ 50th anniversary in 2025?”
Organised by friends Jonny Seller of IPOP Digital and Tom Stead of Worksafe Jersey, who’ve recently launched Salus Eyewear together, the Kick on for Les Amis tournament, held at Les Quennevais School, has raised over £22,000 since it kicked off in 2023.
Tom commented: “We were expecting a great turn out from the teams that entered this year, and their friendly but competitive spirit did not disappoint! It’s always great to see people come together through football and support a cause that means so much to Islanders. It was a pleasure for Jonny and I to play our part in organising it. I would like to thank the volunteer refs and all the teams that took to the field. The event goes from strength to strength, and we are excited to see it become a firm fixture in June every year.”
