New opportunities for growth and points of guidance for Jersey’s retail sector have been outlined in a new Government report released.
Building on the 2021 Interim Retail Strategy, the ‘Jersey: Future-fit Retail Roadmap’ encourages businesses to diversify their offerings and embrace innovation, as part of work to revitalise the town centre.
The Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, Deputy Kirsten Morel, said: “With more than 900 businesses, 7,000 jobs, and a contribution of £375 million in Gross Value Added (GVA), the retail sector is integral to Jersey’s economy and prosperity.
Household spending online in Jersey has risen by 5% since 2014/15, to an average of £106 per week
“As we come to the end of the year’s most important retail season, I’m pleased that the Government is working with the industry to make it future fit. To do that, in a changing retail landscape, we all need to reimagine how people shop.
“Success in transforming Jersey’s retail sector is not just about increasing shop numbers or providing financial support, it is about building on our already vibrant, community-focused environment while enhancing our quality of life and strengthening our economy.”
The key strategic goals are:
- Vibrant: Transform St Helier into a bustling retail and cultural hub by addressing vacancies, enhancing public spaces, and collaborating with arts and heritage sectors. This includes supporting a vibrant night-time economy.
- Customer-First: Prioritise residents’ and visitors’ needs by promoting convenience and seamless experiences.
- Productive: Encourage businesses to adopt automation, build a resilient supply chain and reduce reliance on imports while addressing the climate crisis.
The report underpins part of the Government’s Common Strategic Policy, as it works to strengthen business through skill development and support the community through revitalisation.
Claire Boscq, founder of the JCX Alliance said: “The recently published retail strategy by the Government of Jersey is a promising step forward for the island’s economic vitality.
“I firmly believe that putting customers first is the cornerstone of retail success. By prioritising the needs of both residents and visitors, we create a more inclusive and vibrant community where businesses can thrive. Seamless, convenient experiences aren’t just a luxury – they are an expectation in today’s fast-paced, digitally connected world.
“This strategy highlights an opportunity to align retail offerings with customer-centric principles, ensuring that Jersey stands out as a destination for exceptional service. Whether it’s through digital innovation, simplifying access to local products, or enhancing face-to-face interactions, a customer-first approach will elevate Jersey’s reputation and foster loyalty among residents and visitors alike.
“It’s time to put people at the heart of every decision, promoting a retail environment that’s as welcoming as it is forward-thinking.”
