Next Monday marks 70 years since Jersey’s Longueville Manor opened its doors as a hotel.
On 12 March 1949, the local ‘Morning News’ published an article with the headline “Longueville Manor not to be turned into first-class hotel”. The political objection at the time described it as “an effort to turn one of Jersey’s ‘sacred monuments’ into a pub” and that “if they were going to allow things like that to happen, then there was no hope for Jersey in the future”. Less than four months later, Longueville Manor opened as a hotel with 12 bedrooms and 1 bathroom.
The manor has since been the pioneer of hospitality trends on the island and further afield; from being the first hotel in Jersey to have a swimming pool, the first to have all en-suite bedrooms, to being the first and only hotel in the Channel Islands to be awarded with 5 AA Red Stars and one of only 65 properties throughout the UK and Ireland with this accolade.
In more recent years, the manor has seen the development and launch of their boutique mini spa – The Cottage Garden, the exclusive luxury yacht charter ‘Fizz Too’ and the award-winning Wine Cellar which houses over 4,000 wines, Champagnes and Ports.
In January, the hotel launched ‘Savour’ to commence the year of celebrations. The series of unique experiences with rare wines and culinary expertise welcomed iconic chefs from Relais & Châteaux properties around the UK and Italy who took it in turns to produce their own innovative menu for guests. The events were a huge success and it has recently been confirmed that Savour will run for a second year in 2020.
With other initiatives launching throughout the year, such as exclusive discounts for residents, competitions, collaborations and specially created cocktails to mark the milestone, owners Malcolm and Patricia Lewis wanted to make sure that 2019 was a year to remember.
