Jersey War Tunnels has celebrated the one-year anniversary of Damian Warman as General Manager.
Over the past twelve months, Damian’s leadership has focused on honouring Jersey War Tunnels’ unique heritage while embracing innovative strategies to position the site as a world-class destination for historical education and reflection.
Reflecting on the past year, Damian (pictured) remarked: “This has been a year to be proud of, filled with incredible teamwork and progress. Our focus has been to preserve the Tunnel complex with the utmost care while leveraging technology to deepen our understanding of the site’s environmental needs. Our team remains committed to our role as guardians of history, a responsibility we take very seriously.”
Over the past year, the team at Jersey War Tunnels has reached remarkable milestones, including record attendance and the prestigious Trip Advisor Travelers Choice Award. By integrating environmental monitoring technology, they have been able to closely track and respond to changes within the tunnel complex. Significant investments in local partnerships have supported the operational team to enhance the complex for years to come. Increasing the numbers of locally recruited team members has secured the talent pipeline and helped to build a robust service structure. Efforts to modernise internal communication have also created a collaborative, forward-thinking workplace where staff are encouraged to share ideas and engage openly.
According to Damian, guest feedback has been invaluable to their success: “Every day, every guest and every piece of feedback is a gift, and we’re just getting started. We’re excited to continue building on our achievements and creating a space that not only preserves the past but inspires future generations.”
Reflecting on the challenges of the past year, Damian acknowledged the complexities of balancing such a historic business with modern management practices. From quickly immersing himself in the nuances of Jersey War Tunnels’ 80-year history to building a democratic workplace culture, he credits his team for their support in navigating this journey. Together, he notes, they have created a unique work environment that balances respect for history with a commitment to innovation, making the year’s achievements a true team effort. Optimistic for the future he says, “Jersey is open for business and with collaboration across various sectors, the future of the visitor economy looks extremely promising. With increased guest numbers from across the globe and such positive support from our local visitors, I am extremely energised in what is possible in 2025 with Liberation 80 and beyond.”
