The Jersey Institute of Law is holding a mini symposium, titled ‘Women in Law’, on Friday 6 March to celebrate the success of women working in the local law and justice profession.
The four speakers scheduled for the event represent a wide range of expertise and achievements – from a family law specialist to the island’s first female magistrate and an international law and human rights academic.
The event is being held to celebrate International Women’s Day on Sunday 8 March. International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender equality.
Murielle Nicolas, director of administration at the Institute of Law said: “It’s hard to believe that 100 years ago, women were barred from working in law. They weren’t even allowed to study the profession. We are delighted to have a such a prestigious panel of professional women who have achieved so much success in their chosen legal professions.”
The four guest speakers at the event are:
Advocate Claire Davies
Having passed her English Bar exams in 1992, Claire was called to the Jersey Bar in 1997 becoming an associate of Mourant du Feu & Jeune before joining Backhurst Dorey & Crane. Having served as a partner of that firm from 2005 Claire founded Davies & Ingram as senior partner in 2012. In 2018 Claire commenced a new firm, ‘Claire Davies, Advocate’ specialising in all aspects of family law. Claire also lectures at the Institute of Law.
Judge Bridget Shaw
An assistant magistrate since 2008, Bridget became the island’s first female magistrate in 2013.
Karen Houston
Karen is the acting detective sergeant at the Economic Crime & Confiscation Unit of Jersey Police.
Dr Sasha Holden
Sasha offers consulting advice to NGOs, states and corporations on international law and human rights. She has a particular interest in women’s rights and refugees. She is also an experienced academic who teaches human rights law at the Institute of Law.
