Jersey stakes its claim on the world stage with Geopark campaign launch
Share on LinkedInTwitterFacebookEmail

The aspiring Jersey Island Geopark has launched a brand campaign aimed at securing UNESCO Global Geopark status.

The status is a non-statutory international designation that would place Jersey firmly on the global map as a destination of exceptional geological, cultural, and environmental significance.

Entitled ‘A Symphony of Creation’, the campaign builds support for Jersey’s UNESCO Global Geopark bid – shining a spotlight on the Island’s geological story. The campaign tells the story of an Island forged by fire, ice and sea as conducted by Alex Conway, from theLondon Incidental Orchestra. The film brings to life the raw, elemental story of Jersey’s formation, set to the powerful swell of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.

The campaign positions Jersey not just as a place of natural beauty, but as a living classroom, a cultural archive, and a beacon of sustainable tourism. Achieving UNESCO Global Geopark status would elevate Jersey’s international profile, attract eco-conscious visitors, and support a year-round tourism economy aligned with the Island’s sustainability goals.

Geosites featured in the campaign include La Couperon, Les Blanches Banques (the Sand Dunes), Plémont, Le Pulec, Devil’s Hole and Le Pinacle – each telling a chapter in the Island’s 600-million-year story. These ancient landscapes are more than scenic – they are geological and cultural treasures that the Geopark seeks to spotlight, celebrate, and share.

Paul Chambers, Head of Geopark, commented: “The campaign aims to raise awareness and build community support as Jersey enters the next stage of the submission process for UNESCO designation. The film takes viewers on a visual and auditory journey through the Island’s deep-time creation story – told not with words, but through the universal languages of music and nature. Jersey’s story is one of drama, resilience, and transformation. We’re proud to share it with the world.”

Geoparks are internationally recognised areas that celebrate the intimate connection between people, place, and the planet. Jersey’s candidature is built on the strength of its geological heritage and its unique blend of natural wonders, history, and identity.

he benefits of becoming a UNESCO Global Geopark are wide-reaching:

  • Sustainable tourism: Drives eco-tourism and supports local businesses by encouraging more productive, year-round visitation.
  • Environmental advocacy: Supports research, conservation, and climate adaptation efforts – particularly as Jersey faces threats like coastal erosion and rising sea levels.
  • Education and engagement: Inspires life-long learning through geology, cultural storytelling, and environmental awareness, supporting schools and academic institutions.
  • Global recognition: Joins a prestigious network of 229 Global Geoparks across 50 countries, unlocking new opportunities for international collaboration and profile.

The campaign is led by the Jersey Island Geopark team and supported by Visit Jersey and ArtHouse Jersey. It will be delivered as an integrated campaign across social media, ITV, ITVX video on demand (VOD), partner channels, email marketing, OOH, and local press.
