Jersey Sport is supporting 45 sport organisations with a total of £280,000 for the purposes of off-island travel in 2025, following an unprecedented volume of requests from the sport community.
The redesigned Travel Grant supports the development of Jersey athletes by providing local sport organisations with financial assistance towards the travel costs associated with higher level off-island competition or training than is currently available on-island.
All applicants were required to demonstrate minimum levels of recommended governance through Jersey Sport’s new Safe and Sustainable Sport Health Check. Sport organisations are required to meet any conditions placed on their award, as well as attaining a ‘Green’ status, before funds will be released.
New for 2025, through a one lump-sum award, sports are afforded greater autonomy and support to make decisions on how their funding is best utilised to support off-island sport opportunities in relation to the newly widened fund criteria, the needs of their sport and alignment to their own development plans. The new process therefore allows for greater impact to be demonstrated against Jersey Sport’s 2023-26 strategic plan, GoJ’s Inspiring an Active Jersey 2020-30 strategy and sport organisation’s own needs and ambitions.
Constable Andy Jehan, Assistant Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, with responsibility for sport, said: “The number of applications received shows just how crucial this sort of funding is to our sports community. The value of off-island training and competition cannot be understated and this new grant system removes a significant barrier for our athletes.”
David Kennedy, Chief Executive Officer at Jersey Sport, said: “We are delighted with the response and engagement with our enhanced Travel Grant funding from the local sport community. The new streamlined process and widened eligibility criteria have proven popular and ultimately allow us to better support sport within the island. We look forward to supporting the 45 successful applicants to impactfully utilise their awards during 2025.”
