Jersey Post is sponsoring Team Jersey at this year’s Island Games.

The week-long event, held in Orkney from 12 – 18 July, brings together thousands of sportspeople from 24 islands around the world, competing in 12 of the 18 nominated sports selected by the Orkney Island Games Organising Committee.

Jersey Post has been involved as lead sponsors for Team Jersey for 10 years (since it was held on the island), supporting local athletes as they travelled to Gotland, Gibraltar, Guernsey and now Orkney. Jersey Post’s support includes sponsoring the team kit and helping to transport the team equipment to Orkney.

Two posties, Alan and Toby, will be driving delivery vans over 1,400km over two days to get bikes and other equipment to the event.

Postie James Oliver will also be competing for the first time in the half marathon event, aiming to complete the course in 1 hour 11 minutes. James is a passionate runner, having come third in the Jersey Marathon last year. He said: “The course in Orkney is very hilly. It could mean it’s more a tactical race than a speed one. Luckily being in Jersey gives us loads of options to train on the hills!”

Mark Siviter, CEO of Jersey Post Group, said: “Supporting our community is at the heart of everything we do at Jersey Post. Sport plays such an important role in our community and I’m proud we’ve been able to support Team Jersey at the Island Games for the last 10 years.

“We wish James and all the athletes the best of luck in the games. I’d also like to thank our posties, Alan and Toby, who will be driving up to Orkney with the Team Jersey equipment in our delivery vans.”

Steve Jacobs, Chairman, Island Games Association Jersey, commented: “We are hugely thankful for the fantastic support we have received from Jersey Post, without which we would not be able to send such a big team. Not only financially but being able to use two vans and two drivers to transport all of the equipment to the event, helps us out no end. We hope you will be able to follow and support Team Jersey starting on 12th July.”
