Jersey Overseas Aid has allocated £300,000 to trusted humanitarian partners – British Red Cross, Age International, and People in Need – in response to the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28th.
The 7.7 magnitude quake has left at least 3,000 dead with that figure expected to rise.
Widespread damage to roads, bridges, hospitals, and utilities is hindering rescue and relief efforts with a significant number of the population left without access to basic services. The earthquake has compounded existing needs for millions severely impacted by longstanding localised conflicts, political and economic instability and exposure to frequent climate shocks.
The Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA) response includes the following allocations:
- British Red Cross (£100,000): To support the Myanmar Red Cross to deliver first aid, distribute emergency supplies, and deploy mobile health teams.
- People in Need (£100,000): To provide emergency aid through local partners, while also strengthening local organisations’ ability to respond. This work builds on JOA’s 2023 “Civil Society Now” project, which supported the training and development of local partners to lead effective, community-based humanitarian responses.
- Age International (£100,000): To deliver essential support to older people and people with disabilities (who are often overlooked in response plans) including food, water, medical care, and shelter.
