The Jersey de Putron Challenge has taken place at The Royal Jersey Showground.
It was the first of the challenges to be completed, with the Guernsey challenge taking place on the 12 March.
The de Putron Challenge aims to showcase the brightest young minds in Guernsey and Jersey. The Challenge brings together year six and year eight pupils to test their general knowledge, maths and creative thinking skills.
Jersey College Preparatory School (pictured) emerged victorious in the year six competition with 6 points. Trinity School came in second place, only 1 point behind.
The other schools that made it through the heats to the final were FCJ Primary School, Bel Royal Primary School, La Moye Primary School and St George’s Preparatory School.
The Channel Island Group of Professional Engineers provided an exciting STEM challenge which was the first task both year groups undertook. This round saw teams create catapults out of wooden lolly sticks, rubber bands and a spoon.
After closely contested rounds in the two year eight heats, Victoria College, Grouville, St Michael’s Preparatory School and Les Quennevais came out on top. In the final, it was a closely contested round with Victoria College winning with 14 points and St Michael’s Preparatory School coming second with 13 points.
Every student that took part received a book voucher, and the teams that came first and second place took home money for their schools. Jersey College Preparatory School and Victoria College will be going on to compete against the winning Guernsey teams at the inter-island final which will be held in Jersey at The Royal Jersey Showground on Thursday 21 March, with the winning Guernsey schools travelling over.
Hayley de Putron, a trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation and founder of the de Putron Challenge, said: “Congratulations to Jersey College Preparatory School and Victoria College for winning the challenges in their respective year groups. Every year I am consistently amazed by the depth of knowledge displayed by our young islanders. Every team gave their all today, and I trust that their peers and fellow competitors all gained valuable insights and lessons from this experience.”
