Jersey Cheshire Home has announced the winners of the 2024 Wheelchair Art for Awareness Initiative, a creative campaign designed to promote inclusivity and disability awareness across the island.
This year’s competition saw incredible participation from local schools and businesses each transforming wheelchairs into stunning works of art that embodied creativity and empowerment.
The winners were selected by Gillian Duke (pictured), Managing Director of CCA Galleries, with the People’s Choice award determined by a public vote.
Winner in the ‘Most Creative’ category was Haute Vallée School, with their entry entitled ‘Force of Nature’. This wheelchair artwork was praised for its ingenuity and transformative design. Featuring intricate 2D and 3D elements inspired by the natural world, their piece highlighted the beauty of nature and its restorative power.
Commenting on the entry, Gillian Duke said: “Haute Vallée’s design transports you into a serene and magical world, far removed from day-to-day worries. It’s a masterpiece that connects creativity with a deeper message about our connection to the outdoors.”
The ‘Most Inspirational’ award went to the team at Jersey Cheshire Home themselves. Their entry ‘Wings of Love, Peace and Tranquillity’ captivated the judge with its profound symbolism of freedom, hope and positivity. The large angel wings and soft textures evoke a sense of soaring beyond challenges and embracing life fully.
Sharing her thoughts Gillian said: “This design is incredibly moving, offering a sense of transcendence and inspiration. It beautifully conveys the idea of rising above life’s challenges and embracing hope.”
The People’s Choice award went to the students of Grainville School. Securing just over 50% of the public vote, Grainville School’s wheelchair celebrated ability, diversity, and inclusion with a vibrant display of colours and positive messages.
Donna Abel, CEO of Jersey Cheshire Home, expressed her gratitude and admiration to all participants: “The creativity and passion displayed by everyone involved has been truly inspiring. This initiative not only showcases artistic talent but also sparks important conversations about inclusivity and the celebration of abilities. I’d like to personally congratulate all our winners, including our very own Aileen Landers who led on the Home’s entry and to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who took part.”
