Registration for the Guernsey Butterfield Half Marathon is open, inviting all runners to take on the 13.1-mile coastal run.
A regular staple in the athletics calendar that has traditionally been held in June on Father’s Day, the Butterfield Half Marathon will this year take place on Sunday 26th September 2021, following the success of the postponed event last year.
Race Director, Louise Perrio, explained the benefits of moving the event to later in the year: “Holding the event in September, with its cooler conditions, is much more favourable for long distance running. People can also train during the dryer summer months rather than battling through what can sometimes be a very wet spring.”
“A September date also fits better in the race calendar, enabling a season of uninterrupted summer racing with plenty of time for people to build up to the Half.” added Louise.
The 2021 event will mark the 21st anniversary of the Guernsey Half Marathon and the second year that Butterfield has been the title sponsor of the run. Last year more than 500 runners took part; the largest mass participation athletics event to be held in the British Isles since Covid-19 lockdowns began.
Richard Saunders, Butterfield’s Managing Director in the Channel Islands said: “Last year was our first year organising the event and it certainly threw some curve balls our way. We were very fortunate to have been able to go ahead given all the uncertainty and restrictions that were still in place around the world. We’re very excited for, what will hopefully be, a more straightforward year ahead and to bring the popular community event to the island’s coastline once again.”
With only essential travel currently permitted to and from the island, no overseas entries will be accepted at this time. Overseas entrants who deferred their entry to 2021 event will be offered a refund or deferral to 2022. The date of the 2022 event is yet to be confirmed.
