Islanders lose over £100k due to fraud and scams in 2021

The Jersey Fraud Prevention Forum (the Forum) has reported that Islanders have lost over £100,000 this year to fraud and scams.

The Government of Jersey Police has received 52 reports of fraud in 2021. The types of fraud and scams reported include; mandate fraud which involves email hacking, romance fraud, investment fraud and postal fraud.

Forum Chairman, Chief Inspector Chris Beechey is asking Islanders to remain vigilant throughout the festive period and to keep reporting scams to the Police and members of the Forum: “Compared to last year we have seen a slight decrease in the amount of fraud and scams being reported to the Police, however, this has been the second biggest monetary loss the Island has seen in the last five years.”

“We want to encourage Islanders to speak out against this crime, and to know the Forum are here to protect, advise and help against these fraudsters.”

“These criminals are always adapting the way they target their victims which is why we need to remain vigilant. The Forum has had reports from Islanders of hackers trying to gain remote access to their computers as well as reports of postal scam texts and romance fraud via Facebook.”

“As we get into the festive spirit, we understand that our guards might be down more than usual, with too good to be true deals landing in our inboxes and on our social media feeds. We encourage Islanders to challenge any calls or requests they suspect may not be legitimate and to report them.”

The Forum is raising awareness about the latest fraud and scams targeting the Islanders in its island-wide newsletter that is being delivered to all homes next week. The Forum’s message to local residents is to report any suspicions of fraud to the Forum and if they have experienced any monetary loss to let their bank and the Police know on (01534) 612 612.
