People in Jersey are being given a chance to see how the state-of-the-art Marine Operations Centre works.
An open day is taking place this Saturday (16 December) following investment in the new base at Maritime House in St Helier.
It will be open to visitors from 10am to 12noon.
Officers from Jersey Coastguard and Vessel Traffic Services along with Marine & Port Operations will be on hand to show off a typical day in the life of a Watch Officer together with an insight into the issues they deal with on a daily basis.
Jersey Coastguard & VTS Manager, Aaron Gavey, said: “We always like the opportunity to show off our state-of-the-art Maritime Operations Centre, which acts as the 24/7 hub for all aspects of Coastguard, Vessel Traffic Services and general harbour operations.”
“The Centre itself underwent a major refurbishment in 2015 and the team would be delighted to walk you around, answer any questions about sea safety. We’ll also show you the new technology available, which aids our operation, provide a better understanding of the process involved for a ship’s arrival into port as well as how we co-ordinate a Search & Rescue. At the very least we can offer you a free cup of tea and mince pie”
Entry to the family-friendly event is free and booking is not required. Ports bosses say children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
