A new survey designed to gather feedback from islanders who have participated in family mediation in Jersey has been launched by The Resolution Centre in collaboration with the Jersey Family Law Association, Queen Margaret University and Scottish Mediation.
The initiative and survey aim to improve and enhance family mediation services for individuals navigating family-related disputes, including separation, divorce and child arrangements.
Family mediation is a voluntary process that supports individuals, couples and families to work through difficult issues in a structured and neutral environment. It plays a crucial role in resolving conflicts outside of the courtroom, helping families reach agreements that work for everyone involved while avoiding the emotional and financial costs of litigation.
The Bailiff of Jersey, Sir Timothy Le Cocq, has voiced his support of mediation as an effective alternative to legal proceedings, offering a less combative and more constructive way to resolve disputes without the need for court intervention.
In awarding certificates at the Resolution Centre’s graduation ceremony for professional mediation and mediator skills with Queen Margaret University, he said: “Disputes take up a significant portion of court time, often adding to the emotional strain and delaying resolutions. This not only places pressure on the Judicial system but can also prolong conflict for those involved. [Family] mediation offers a valuable alternative by providing a faster, more economical and amicable solution, helping to ease the burden on our courts.”
Howard Le Cornu, Founding Partner and CEO at The Resolution Centre, said: “We believe that family mediation plays a vital role in helping families navigate difficult times and finding resolutions that work for everyone involved. With this survey, we are committed to listening to the voices of those who have experienced the process firsthand. Their feedback is invaluable in shaping and improving services, ensuring that appropriate support is provided during what are often emotionally charged situations.
“Our goal is to meet the needs of our community with empathy, professionalism and a strong focus on achieving the best possible outcomes for families in Jersey.”
