Entry to Guernsey Museum at Candie is free on Saturday 28 November to celebrate the current exhibition, Voice-Vouaïe.
The day is sponsored by Island Language LBG, which was formed as a non-profit group to promote Guernesiais learning. Members from the group will host a table on the day, where people can find out about how and where to learn the language. There will also be mini workshops and some extra activities.
Voice-Vouaïe features 105 portraits of people who grew up with Guernesiais, the ancestral language of Guernsey. The exhibition is the result of a partnership project spanning two years between the Museum, photographer Aaron Yeandle and language consultant Yan Marquis. The criteria for someone having taking part in the project is that they grew up in an environment where Guernesiais was spoken. Some participants still speak the language daily, others hardly at all and others are rediscovering – or ‘remembering’ – it.
The exhibition includes the portraits of all the participants alongside photographs of objects that are important to them. There will be a listening station to hear some of the audio recordings. Guernsey Museum at Candie is open for on Saturday 28 November from 10.00 until 16.00. If you have limited mobility, please contact the Museum for more information on 726518 or email [email protected].
The exhibition finishes on 31 December 2020 and has been kindly supported by the Guernsey Arts Commission and Specsavers. Art for Guernsey is the Logistics Sponsor for the project.
