The IoD’s latest breakfast event explored the critical intersection between politics and business in Guernsey.
The session, featuring an informative panel discussion and audience Q&A, addressed the evolving political landscape and its implications for local business leaders as the 2025 election approaches.
Following positive feedback from last month’s IoD Next Gen Forum workshop on politics, this event brought valuable insights to an audience of experienced leaders, executives, and professionals. Attendees engaged in discussions about Guernsey’s unique consensus government system, voter participation, and the role of businesses in fostering political and economic progress.
The event brought together notable contributors, including Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez, President of the Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure; Matt Fallaize, Senior Reporter at The Guernsey Press; and Shelaine Green, Chair of Women in Public Life Guernsey.
Questions included how voters can identify candidates capable of leading Guernsey effectively and what role businesses can play in influencing policy and collaborating with the government. The session also delved into the workings of government processes, why some policies advance more quickly than others, and the practical steps potential candidates should consider ahead of the 2025 election.
Jo Huxtable, Vice Chair of IoD Guernsey, highlighted the importance of business involvement, stating: “Business leaders have a vital role in shaping the island’s prosperity. Understanding our government’s structure and engaging in the electoral process equips leaders to make informed decisions and advocate for policies that benefit the island.”
