Need some motivation to improve your own wellbeing? Want to help your Island community at the same time? Register for the 2023 TMF Island Walk.
The 2023 TMF Island Walk has just opened for registration and is the perfect opportunity to not only walk around the whole island (or a section of it) to raise money for charity, but to get the motivation to improve your own health. Last year walkers raised £100,000 for local causes, and for the first time walkers can now vote for a beneficiary of their choice.
This week is said to be the time when we’re all at our lowest. The post-Christmas doldrums combine with the cold, damp, dull, weather to create the January blues. Walking is perfect because it gets you fitter, helps you sleep better, and you get to walk around our beautiful island and experience the mental health benefits of being in nature.
Robert Syvret, Chair of the TMF Island Walk Trustees said: “The Island Walk is about taking on your own personal challenge, whether it’s walking the full 48 miles, being a part of a relay team, or joining the Lieutenant Governor on his 13 mile route.
“Registering now gives participants the opportunity to start training and enjoying the scenery our Island has to offer. It also provides the incentive of knowing that the money you raise will be helping those less fortunate than yourself. We know islanders love this iconic event because they come back year after year.”
If you register for the TMF Island Walk before the end of February, walkers can take advantage of the early bird discount.
The walk, which was founded in 1991, is an iconic fixture in the Island’s charity challenges and the largest single-day fundraiser. TMF sponsors the event, which pays for running costs, while the Trustees and organisers are all volunteers. This ensures all money raised goes direct to local charities.
Tim Houghton, Market Head – Channel Islands, for TMF Group said: “The TMF Island Walk is all about community. Every walker raises funds for local charities, while also being a part of the walking and volunteer community that makes up this iconic event.
“Our TMF relay team enjoy fantastic social and wellbeing benefits with regular training sessions in the lead up to the walk. I urge workplace colleagues and families to get a team together and join either the relay or the Lieutenant Governor’s walk if you feel unable to tackle the full 48 miles.”
The main beneficiaries of the 2023 walk are:
- Jersey Employment Trust/Acorn
- Silkworth/Families in Recovery Trust, and the Jersey Recovery College
- Five other charities will receive smaller amounts of money: Autism Jersey, the JSPCA, Art in the Frame, Jersey Stroke Association, and Jersey Brain Tumour.
This year walkers will be able to vote for a sixth charity and the one with the most votes will also receive a share of the donations.
The 2023 Island Walk will take place on Saturday 17th June. Early bird registrations are now open . More information can be found here.
