What do you think of Jersey’s Esplanade Quarter?
How should the area, which includes the stretch from the new international finance centre buildings, past Liberty Wharf and through to Liberation Square, look, what should it be for, and how should it connect with the rest of St Helier?
It sounds a simple question, but the original masterplan, produced in 2008, is now being updated. At the time it envisaged a new winter gardens and main square which it compared to the Rockerfeller Centre in New York.
A decade on, the reality doesn’t match the ambition.
Design Council, an impartial, independent design body which is supporting the Department of the Environment’s work to create an integrated, distinctive and sustainable planning framework, will lead the workshop which follows a previous consultation.
Environment Minister, Deputy Steve Luce, said: “The first workshop was really productive – people made serious and thoughtful contributions around issues such as community involvement in the planning, better connectivity, the importance of creating an attractive and user-friendly place with open, accessible public spaces, and creating an area that reflects Jersey’s character.”
“This next workshop takes us on a stage further and again, we appeal to people with an interest to get involved; their views are integral to the project’s success and will ensure we produce an imaginative, inclusive and workable interim plan.”
The event, called Re-imagining the Esplanade Quarter: Design Principles and the Wider Context, takes place on Wednesday 31 January from 10.30am to 3.30pm at the Radisson.
