Helping Wings, Jersey’s flying charity that offers life-changing flying experiences to disabled and disadvantaged individuals, has announced that local resident Stuart Thompson has been awarded a 2025 Helping Wings Flying Award.
Stuart (pictured), who has a prosthetic leg following an accident, has a lifelong passion for aviation. With this award, sponsored by Ports of Jersey and Helping Wings, he will receive 10 hours of flying tuition with Skywalker Flight Training at the Jersey Aero Club, along with membership to the Jersey Aero Club for 2025.
Stuart recently took to the skies during a visit by Aerobility, a UK charity that provides flying experiences for disabled people. Instructor Mike Owen assessed Stuart’s capabilities and confirmed that he does not require a specially adapted aircraft – a huge step that means Stuart can begin his flight training right away.

Upon receiving the news of the award, Stuart said: “Wow… I can’t believe it, thank you so much. I can’t wait to get started. I absolutely loved my flight on Sunday and was so happy I could use the aircraft without the added control.”
Stuart’s background includes time spent around the airport as a child, inspired by his father who worked as an aircraft engineer. He began taking trial flights before his accident and is now excited to return to the skies.
Helping Wings would also like to congratulate Tobias Hosking, the current student pilot sponsored by the Butlin Family Charity Trust. Tobias, who received 10 hours of flying in 2024, is making excellent progress. With a further 10 hours now awarded, it is hoped he will soon achieve his first solo flight.
