The Channel Islands Co-operative Society is looking for volunteers to help plant 100 trees and shrubs, which will become part of a living corridor around the whole of Jersey.

The Society has joined forces with Jersey Trees for Life to celebrate its 100th birthday and make a lasting impact on Jersey’s environment.

The trees and hedgerow whips will be planted in Grouville on Saturday 18 January. Volunteers are needed from 9.30am.  If you are interested in volunteering, register online at www.channelislands.coop/treeplanting

As well as planting the Society’s 100 trees and whips, volunteers will also have the opportunity to plant additional hedgerow whips paid for by a £1,000 donation from the Co-op’s Eco Fund, that Jersey Trees for Life were successful in securing last year.

Since 2007 Jersey Trees for Life have planted more than 50,000 individual hedgerow whips, plus over 5,000 trees around the island amounting to more than 25 miles of hedges being planted. The charity is now aiming to have one continuing living corridor around the island to help protect the local wildlife and keep it away from busy roads and prey. The 100 trees and shrubs the Society will be planting will help form that living corridor.

Katey White, membership manager for the Society, said: ‘We would love our members to help us mark 100 years since we opened our doors by protecting our local environment and planting 100 trees and shrubs.

‘We hope the day will be an opportunity to give something back and we would encourage families to sign up. We are delighted to be working with Jersey Trees for Life on their Jersey Hedgerow Campaign, protecting Jersey’s wildlife and environment.’

Volunteers will be asked to help dig holes, carry cones for the trees and shrubs to the relevant places, plant the trees and whips and put soil and mulch on top of the trees once planted.

More information about what is needed on the day can be found at www.channelislands.coop/treeplanting
