Jersey islanders are being invited to share their views on a new draft strategy for developing and supporting arts and culture in Jersey.

The draft Arts Strategy, which has been published by the Government of Jersey, provides a five-year plan to integrate the arts and cultural sector more effectively with key areas of Island life including education, health and wellbeing, the environment and the economy.

The draft Arts Strategy covers all forms of art including performing arts, visual arts, music and literature. It aims to demonstrate the art sector’s contribution to Island life socially, economically, environmentally and culturally, and is focused on four main themes:

  • Arts, Education and Personal Development;
  • Arts, Health and Sustainable Wellbeing;
  • Arts, Environment and Place-making; and
  • Arts, Economic Prosperity and inclusive Growth.

In drafting the strategy, the Government of Jersey’s Local Economy team consulted with a wide range of local arts sector stakeholders and worked with international arts and creative sector consultant, Dr Tom Fleming of Tom Fleming Creative Consultancy.

Deputy Kirsten Morel, Assistant Minister with responsibility for Arts, Culture and Heritage said: “The new arts strategy provides a roadmap for development of the arts sector over the coming years and is an opportunity to reaffirm the role and value of art to the life of our community.

“This is an important step forward for our arts and cultural sector and is enormously important to the Island’s future because, among other things, successful delivery of the strategy will help young islanders build their careers around the arts, cultural and creative industries.

“In developing the strategy, we’ve consulted with organisations and individuals who are involved in arts and culture in the Island. I believe the draft strategy maps out an exciting future for the sector but it’s crucial that I hear the views of everyone who has an interest in the arts and their thoughts on how we can continue developing art and culture in Jersey.”

The States of Jersey has committed to investing 1% of overall Government expenditure in arts, culture and heritage from 2022.

The consultation began on Friday 20th August and will remain open until 1st October. Islanders who wish to take part should complete the survey on the consultations page here.
