Guernsey Immigration ordinarily issue between 6,000 and 7,000 passports each year. However, during 2020 the team only received 3,500 passport applications due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
It is anticipated there is a significant number of passports that may require renewal both locally and in the UK, and as passports are printed centrally in the UK, it is likely the printing process will take longer than usual. Therefore it is recommend that passport holders check and renew their passport at the earliest opportunity.
Passport validity
Your current passport, regardless if it denotes EU wording or not, is valid for use providing it has not expired. Previously some passports were issued in excess of 10 years. However, passports are now issued for a maximum period of 10 years for adults, 5 years for a child. Rules now require you must have a minimum of 6 months validity on your passport from date of travel. This six month validity period must fall within the first 10 years of passport ‘life’. Any additional months above the 10 years initial duration will no longer be a recognised as a valid period in which to travel and will require early renewal.
If in any doubt as to passport validity, either click here or call the immigration office.
