The North Show’s iconic illuminated cross will be powered by solar energy for the first time, thanks to The Little Green Energy Company (LGEC).
The 9ft by 5ft wooden structure normally runs on mains electricity, but as part of efforts to make the show more environmentally friendly, organisers asked The Little Green Energy Company if they could amend the electricity system. This would allow the cross to be illuminated by locally generated solar photovoltaic (PV) solar energy with a renewable energy battery storage system. Jamie Clark – Chief Technical Officer said that “The Little Green Energy Company are very happy to support the North Show Committee on their new sustainability initiatives and we hope everyone has a great time at the show.”
“We wished to make the show more carbon neutral and we’ve already started to make changes in the bar area, with the removal of plastic cups in place of biodegradable ones.” said North Show vice-chairman Dave Northrop.
“We have also had green electricity boxes put in and have moved away from halogen to LED lighting.”
This year’s show – the first since 2019 due to Covid – will be a smaller, more local affair. With no funfair and more locally operated stalls, show organisers are anticipating savings will be made while still providing a fun family event.
