20 hair and beauty students from The Guernsey Institute took part in the prestigious Association of Hairdressers & Therapists regional Channel Islands heat hosted by Highlands College Jersey.
This was the first time that students from across the Channel Islands competed in the Association of Hairdressers & Therapists (AHT) competition, with the three top placing students in each category qualifying to progress to the national competition taking place on Monday 12 May 2025 in Blackpool. This marks an exciting milestone within the vibrant hair and beauty industry across the Channel Islands. Students from The Guernsey Institute (TGI) showcased their exceptional talent and dedication. The event was an action-packed and exhilarating experience, providing students with the opportunity to step beyond their usual salon work and put their skills to the test in a competitive environment.
Hairdressing apprentices took part in four categories and nine of the 12 will now be travelling to the finals in May.
Sally Warburton-Ward, Head of Department, Hair & Beauty at The Guernsey Institute, highlighted the significance of this competition for Guernsey students: “This is such an important opportunity for our learners and we’re delighted to be a part of it. This experience allows our young people to not only showcase the skills they’ve developed, but also build confidence, gain exposure within the industry and, importantly have fun and make some amazing memories.
“The AHT competition is a great way to support our learners to foster creativity, experience healthy competition and be provided with a motivational platform to advance their career aspirations. I am delighted that we have nine students progressing to the finals and I wish them the very best of luck.”
Enya Bessin, Hairdressing Lecturer added: “Our students’ impressive performances, reflected in the outstanding results, have undoubtedly boosted their confidence and reinforced their abilities. We are immensely proud of every student who represented TGI with professionalism, hard work, and passion for their industry.
“We extend our thanks to Highlands College, along with Pawel and his team, for the warm hospitality and seamless organisation, ensuring a fantastic experience for all participants. The event was a tremendous success, and we eagerly look forward to welcoming Highlands College students to Guernsey in 2026 when we will have the privilege of hosting the regional heat. A special thank you also goes to our generous sponsors, whose support makes opportunities like this possible.”
