The Bailiwick of Guernsey’s Data Protection Authority has launched its search for a new Commissioner to take over from its current Commissioner, Emma Martins, whose agreed term finishes at the end of 2023.

The Data Protection Commissioner is a statutory role that acts as a non-voting member of the Data Protection Authority, and CEO of the Office of the Data Protection Authority (ODPA).

The Data Protection Authority is the independent statutory body tasked with overseeing the Bailiwick’s data protection law. Comprising a Chair and six voting members, the Authority provides governance and strategic direction to the ODPA.

The ODPA is the operational body that carries out the regulatory functions of The Data Protection (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law, 2017 as delegated by the Authority. As CEO of the ODPA the Commissioner is responsible for the execution of the ODPA’s strategic plan and annual work programme.

Richard Thomas CBE, the Authority’s Chairman commented: “We are looking for someone with the experience and personality to ensure that we remain fully
effective. Everyone understands the importance of responsible use of personal information, but making it happen in practice requires skilful use of the available tools. Emma Martins (pictured) will be a tough act to follow, but the right person will find this to be a very fulfilling leadership role.”

Applicants can request a recruitment pack by email, closing date for applications is 28 February 2023.

The new Commissioner will take up the post in January 2024 for a 5-year term.
