Guernsey Energy is set to begin a major infrastructure upgrade project, starting at Vazon, aimed at future-proofing Guernsey’s gas network.
These essential works are part of this year’s extensive capital investment programme which will improve the resilience of the gas infrastructure while supporting the island’s goal of achieving Net Zero by 2050.
The project, starting in April and running through to early August, involves replacing existing metallic pipelines with more durable plastic pipes. These modern materials are resistant to corrosion and leaks, reducing maintenance needs and extending the operational lifespan of the network. The upgraded pipes will also ensure that Guernsey’s network will be able to supply different types of gas in the future, including gas from renewable sources, an important part of Guernsey Energy’s Net Zero plans. Where possible, the installation process will use a trenchless method, minimising the need for road excavation, helping to limit disruption to residents and businesses in the area, and minimising the environmental impact of using raw materials to reinstate the roads.
Work will be conducted in four phases with traffic management measures in place to ensure safety. Temporary closures and restricted access will be required at certain times, and efforts will be made to maintain property access wherever possible.
Richard Beharrell, Network Operations Manager at Guernsey Energy said: “It is important to us to modernise Guernsey’s infrastructure, not only to ensure a reliable and efficient gas network, but to also meet our business’ sustainability goals.
“By using materials that are more durable and environmentally friendly, we are reducing our carbon footprint and supporting the island’s commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050.
“We appreciate the community’s patience as these necessary improvements are completed over the coming months.”
