Guernsey Electricity has endorsed the Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure’s plans to protect and build the resilience of the Island’s natural environment through the recently announced biodiversity strategy.
The 2020 Strategy for Nature seeks to connect Guernsey’s community with nature to strengthen awareness, understand and support, make biodiversity mainstream and integrated into decision making and drive the long-term management of nature.
The Chief Minister mentioned the Strategy in his speech on Revive & Thrive last month. Alex Herschel, Guernsey Electricity’s Environmental Sustainability Manager, led the review and redesign of the Strategy during her six-month secondment to the Committee and is delighted to see its introduction.
“Guernsey Electricity was very supportive of my secondment to the States to advise and work on the Strategy for Nature as the company is committed to helping to lead the way on promoting environmental sustainability in Guernsey. At the core of the strategy is the ethos that the more the community cares for nature, the more it will want to protect it. The stronger the awareness of the value of nature and the pressures it is facing, the greater the likelihood that individuals, organisations and businesses perform actions to support and protect nature”.
Alex’s seconded role is to liaise with various key stakeholders within the States and externally, including environmental non-government organisations, to ensure the Strategy for Nature and supporting action plan meets the needs and aspirations of all those involved.
Sally-Ann David, Guernsey Electricity’s Chief Operating Officer, said, “Whilst many think we simply deliver electricity to power the Island, our remit is much wider, as we look to provide an affordable and sustainable supply and maintain a responsible attitude towards the environment. We are delighted to have supported the development of the new Strategy
through Alex and look to lead the transition to a carbon neutral future”.
For the remainder of her time with the States, Alex is supporting the development of a five year action plan which will be reviewed by the E&I Committee next month.
