Four local students have gained the opportunity to launch successful careers locally asrecipients of Guernsey Electricity’s latest bursary awards.
Kieran Humphrey and Sammy Galpin, both 18, who are starting their university courses this month, Katie Rowe, 20, is going into her third year and Amber Rondel, in her final year, have been granted £2,000 and paid work experience through the scheme which has now been running for 11 years.
Chris Watkin, Head of HR for Guernsey Electricity, said the company recognised its commitment to investing in the local community and also its willingness to support undergraduates in a variety of disciplines.
“We feel it is a privilege to help develop the next generation of skills that benefit not onlyGuernsey Electricity, but the Island as a whole. The bursary scheme is also not exclusive to engineering qualifications so we always welcome applications from those studying a range of relevant subjects.”
Kieran starts a civil engineering degree at Southampton University this month and Sammy is attending Sheffield to study Material Science and Engineering. Katie is going into her third year of Chemical Engineering B.Eng. in Manchester whilst Amber’s final year is in Media Production based at De Montfort University.
Mr Watkin added that the work experience element of the bursary helps hone and developthe students’ skills in a hands-on way.
“Kieran is being seconded to our Asset Management Department and both Sammy and Katie will spend their time back on the Island in our Generation Department. Amber has already been working with us prior to applying for the bursary so she and the others are all receiving very relevant and practical experience.”
Final year student, Amber Rondel, said: “I really value the opportunity to refine and develop.”
The Guernsey Electricity bursary scheme has been running since 2007 and provides students with an annual sum of £2,000 for their undergraduate degree and paid work experience during holidays. Applications are accepted from a range of relevant subjects including HR, IT, Business Studies, Environmental Studies and Project Management.
