Get involved and ‘switch-up’ how we talk about climate change

It’s time to ‘switch-up’ how we talk about climate change… here’s two reasons why…

  • All too often, we make things more complex than they really need to be.  Complicated science and statistics and focusing on the negative can make many of us feel totally overwhelmed and disengage altogether.
  • Plus, the majority of conversations that are happening occur in an echo chamber – we’re not hearing all voices and we haven’t been making the conversation accessible enough to reach everyone in our community.

Sheena Brockie of The Good Jersey Life explains:  “We want to fix that!

“We have spent the last few weeks working on a super exciting project, with Linzi Hawkin and Luke Hosty of protect.blue, Jersey’s Climate Conversation and The Howard Davis Farm Trust to spark meaningful conversations about climate change.

“We’ve built a guide that translates climate science back into language that we can all understand, with some useful tips on how best to frame your conversations plus a whole bunch of questions to get you started.

“We also want islanders to know just how much is already happening on the ground – so when you flip your guide over you’ll find a map showing some of the things we’re doing, here in Jersey, to adapt to & mitigate against climate change.”

The group are looking for 100 islanders to take part in a project to start talking about climate.  But as Sheena says, “The interesting part is that we don’t want the usual suspects. We don’t want the folk who are already talking about climate or who work in the space. We want to invite new voices in, to explore the issue from different perspectives and hear the opinions from all parts of our island community.

“We’re looking for anyone who loves to talk. You don’t need any knowledge of climate change or environmental issues – just a good dose of curiosity and a commitment to spark conversations with your friends, family, co-workers & community.”

If you are interested, you will be invited to a 90 minute workshop, outdoors, in nature, to give you all the tools you’ll need to get started.
