Skate Space will have broadband connectivity, provided by Sure, when the newly transformed St Ouen’s Methodist Church opens for skateboarding and creative activities later this year.
In addition to contributing WiFi connectivity, Sure is funding the technology that will be used in ‘The tank’, the Skate Space video editing suite, to meet the needs of the creative community and support the project’s mission to nurture creativity among islanders.
Skate Space is a community-driven project aimed at revitalising the 1871 Methodist Church in St Ouen, which has been empty for more than 40 years. The project seeks to create a multifunctional space where individuals can engage in skateboarding, video making, art, and photography. Skate Space will provide a safe, fun, and inspiring environment for Jersey’s youth and families, encouraging physical activity and creative expression.
Paul Acton, Chief Executive at Sure Jersey, said: “Skate Space is such an exciting project, and we knew immediately that we wanted to be a part of the transformation of St Ouen’s Methodist Church into this incredible multifunctional space.
“We are committed to helping create a sustainable and thriving community that will benefit Jersey for years to come, which is why we’re not only investing in the connectivity of the building, but also the lives of those the space, and ‘The Tank’ will benefit. The facility will offer digital workstations and video editing technology, enabling young people to learn new skills and explore their creative potential.”
The vision for Skate Space extends beyond the installation of ramps. It encompasses a holistic approach to community building, integrating skateboarding with artistic and cultural activities. By collaborating with the skateboarding community and other creative individuals, Skate Space aims to become a beacon of social and cultural engagement for St Ouen and beyond.
A spokesperson for Skate Space, said: “This collaboration marks an exciting step forward in our mission to revitalise St Ouen’s Methodist Church and foster a space where everyone can skate, create, and connect.”
