Care Academy, the training arm of LV Care Group in Jersey, has announced the rollout of its online care training facility in response to the removal of face to face training due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a result of the increased demand for new carers locally and the loss of ability to deliver face to face training under current circumstances, Care Academy has made the decision to offer the online training courses completely free of charge. The cost of the courses under normal face to face circumstances would be in the region of £250 per person to complete all of the training modules available.
The courses are for those individuals currently working in the industry to update their training, as well as people new to the profession to train in the principals of care and be eligible to start new care roles; something which will prove invaluable during the shortfall in staff numbers locally during the pandemic outbreak. The courses are also suitable for anyone delivering care or support services to family members at this time.
180 people have currently signed up in Jersey to the online platform, including current carers, nurses and support workers and people new to the sector from both the private and charity sectors.
The courses cover the mandatory requirements for the healthcare field which meet the Jersey Care Commission requirements and align to the Core Skills Training Framework.
The following courses are now available:
- Health and safety
- Infection control
- Principles of moving people safely
- Data protection
- Safeguarding
- Fire safety
- Introduction to Food Hygiene and Safety in Health and Social Care
- Introduction to Equality, Diversity and Human Rights
Additional online courses will be available in the coming weeks to include:
- Basic life support (theory only)
- Care certificate (theory course, but a practical competency document to complete in practice will be provided).
- Sepsis awareness
- Awareness of medication administration
Due to the fact that information relating to COVID-19 is changing at such a rapid pace, a dedicated course in this area has not been rolled out and instead people are being encouraged to follow good infection control practices and refer to the Government of Jersey website, as well as the World Health Organisation.
Verity Sangan, Head of Training and Education for Care Academy said: “We are proud to be able to offer this free online training in the local community at a time when the care sector in Jersey is in desperate need of additional support as it battles the challenges of COVID-19. The courses will give any new or existing carers an underpinning knowledge to work in the care sector. We have also created a ‘Best Resources’ section, which is full of links to websites and information which will help anyone in the care sector, from seasoned nurses and carers to those brand new or returning to roles. For anyone new to care, completing mandatory training is part of the induction process, and we are therefore glad we can enable people to do this online in the absence of any face to face training.”
