Lifestyle Medicine Jersey, a local non-profit, is launching Live Well, a free 12-week course designed to help Islanders manage, and even reverse, metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome is a condition that increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

The programme is open to Islanders diagnosed with, or at risk of, metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a combination of conditions like being overweight, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol or pre-diabetes. It’s more common than many people realise, with estimates suggesting that up to 1/3 of adults in Jersey may be affected.

Funded by a grant from Jersey Community Foundation, the programme provides simple, practical ways to improve health through evidence-based lifestyle changes such as better nutrition, exercise, stress management and more.

Dr Jo Darwood and Lauren Perchard-Rees (pictured), experienced healthcare professionals with over 40 years of combined expertise in health and wellbeing, lead the Live Well programme, which includes:

  • 6 x 60-to-90-minute group education sessions
  • Learning about nutrition, movement, stress management, sleep and social connection
  • 6 x Optional practical sessions, such as exercise or cooking classes, to build confidence and skills
  • A supportive community to help participants stay motivated

Dr Jo Darwood, GP and Director at Lifestyle Medicine Jersey, said: “The Live Well courses are all about prevention and empowerment. By addressing the root causes of metabolic syndrome, we aim to help people take control of their health, reduce dependence on medication and live longer, healthier lives. With the rising prevalence of chronic conditions, focusing on prevention has never been more critical – not only does it improve individual wellbeing, but it also reduces the strain on our Island’s healthcare system.”

A recent participant, Ronni from St Martin, said: “I’m so happy with my results, so enthusiastic about this way of living and grateful to have had the opportunity to attend.”
