Alderney residents have reported incidents of calls from a female purporting to be from their bank, advising them that unauthorised debit transactions have been identified on their accounts.
These residents have been the victims of previous fraudulent calls that have resulted in unauthorised access to accounts, using the cover of Amazon Customer services or High Street banks.
This media release has been produced to advise Bailiwick residents of this practice occurring again and to remind them that their bank, Amazon customer services, Sky and other service providers will supply you with adequate credentials and information to satisfy that they are who they say they are.
If you have any doubt about who you are speaking to, do not furnish any account details or passwords and hang up immediately. Use the numbers provided by your bank or other organisation to call their bonafide customer services to check and report the incident or consider using the apps they provide if you have them.
Nationally there have been cases where the caller has been able to stay on the line and misdirect the victim, so do not call straight away and where possible use a different phone line (such as a mobile or house phone).
If you suspect that they have accessed your computer or device, disconnect it from the internet immediately and consider turning off your router and if using a tablet or phone disconnect it from any WiFi or mobile connection.
If you know of a relative or family member who has been a victim of a similar incident in the last 12 months, please remind them to be especially careful as it appears that the recent calls have been to those targeted previously.
If you have been contacted, you can report it at ActionFraud or call 0300 123 2040.
If you have any information regarding these incidents you are asked to contact the Alderney Duty Officer on 01481 222222 or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
