First-time marathon-runner and EY Assurance Manager, Maelle Smith, is gearing up to partake in this year’s gruelling London Marathon.
Maelle (pictured) is running in memory of her late step-dad and aims to raise crucial funds for Jersey Hospice.
Maelle’s step-dad, Mark Sutton, tragically lost his battle to an aggressive and rare form of terminal cancer in September 2022. His final weeks were spent under the exceptional care of Jersey Hospice, leaving an indelible impression on Maelle and her family. The compassionate care received instilled in her a profound gratitude, motivating her to give back.
Maelle shared: “The staff are real-life angels, they did everything they could to ensure Mark was as comfortable as possible and it was a comfort to know he was being so well looked after. They also provided huge support to my mum during a traumatic time.
“Thee care quality at Jersey Hospice is simply incredible. My family and I are infinitely grateful for everything they did during those tremendously challenging final weeks.”
Poised to tackle the daunting challenge of her first marathon, Maelle hopes to raise substantial funds for the charity that provided much-needed solace during his last days.
Maelle explained how she was feeling about the challenge of the London Marathon, explaining: “As a first-time marathoner, the weight of the challenge was originally very daunting! However, I’ve been committed to my training plan which has included many chilly early morning runs before work in the wind and rain, as well as a bigger focus on managing fatigue as my training is coinciding with the busiest time for me at work. What has kept me motivated throughout is knowing the contribution I am making to Jersey Hospice.
“I wanted to do something that would be a surprise to others, that would require physical and mental preparation and huge dedication, in order to raise as much money as possible for the charity. I know that every mile will bring me one step closer to contributing to Jersey Hospice, which is the most important thing.”
As part of her preparation, Maelle will also run the EY-sponsored Hospice 2 Hospice half marathon on Sunday, 24 March. Working at EY, Maelle has already raised nearly £1,000 alone through in-office bake sales. Further fuelling her mission, EY will match every pound raised as part of their corporate responsibility commitment.
Maelle thanked everyone who has already contributed to her fundraising: “Whether big or small, each donation plays a vital role. Thanks to everyone so far who has made a donation. It means a lot to me knowing it will continue to help Jersey Hospice to be able to provide the same level of care to someone in a similar position to Mark.”
