World Social Work Day

Highlands College has announced the forthcoming third annual conference for World Social Work Day, scheduled for Tuesday 19 March 2024.

This highly anticipated event offers a unique platform for professionals in the social work and social care sector to come together, fostering networking opportunities and celebrating their impactful contributions.

The theme for this year’s event, titled ‘Transformative Change’ underscores the imperative for social workers to embrace innovative, community-led approaches that drive positive societal changes. A highlight of the day will be the presentation of the Taskforce Report on Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) by Kate Wright, Independent Chair. This groundbreaking report, derived from extensive research conducted in Jersey, will be accompanied by a panel of taskforce members engaging in a Q&A session. This will provide invaluable insights into collective roles within agencies, emphasising our commitment to supporting this crucial initiative.

The Probation Service will also showcase the ‘Jersey Domestic Abuse Programme’, designed to empower individuals with the skills needed to make positive choices within intimate relationships, ensuring the safety of all involved. Throughout the day, attendees will have opportunities to explore the support available from the Probation Service, as well as other statutory and third sector agencies from across the island, providing a valuable opportunity for collaborative working.

Transformative Change serves as a timely reminder of the pivotal role social workers and partner agencies play in propelling positive societal shifts. The event will showcase the impactful contributions of University College Jersey’s social work students and graduates who are true drivers of positive change. Through dedicated workshops, developed by students and graduates, attendees will gain insights into their educational journeys, discovering ways to collectively support them during social work placements and beyond. UCJ’s current students will also be representing their placement providers, showcasing the incredible work within these organisations.

The day promises a rich tapestry of learning and collaboration, featuring a provided lunch and ample opportunities for networking. Attendees will have the chance to celebrate the dedication and hard work of everyone in the field, making it a truly enriching experience.

Kate Wright, Independent Chair of VAWG Taskforce, explained: “Social workers often perform vital work in supporting victims and survivors of gender-based violence. They may also be the first person to spot the signs that a woman or child is a victim of abuse and take the first steps to help them. As such, I am really pleased to be a part of this Social Work Day event with such a key group of people in the fight against violence against women and girls.”

Mike Cutland, Chief Probation Office and Social Worker, said: “The World Social Work Day provides an opportunity for those working or interested in the social work profession to come together and consider and learn about some of the challenges facing our societies .  It is through our increased awareness that we can be encouraged to use our learning, skills, and experience to promote social justice, fairness and respect for all.”

Jess Garner, Programme Lead Social Work Degree at Highlands College, said: “We are thrilled to host the third annual World Social Work Day conference and embrace the theme of ‘Transformative Change’. This event is of great importance for our profession, underscoring the remarkable work and commitment of our community in driving positive social impact. We are looking forward to this day of learning, collaboration, and celebration.”
