Vista: An exhibition with James Colmer and Elinor Bray

Jaro Art Gallery presents Vista, a captivating exhibition by renowned visual artist and illustrator James Colmer.

Based in Guernsey, James has spent a lifetime immersed in the island’s natural beauty, drawing inspiration from its surrounding seas and their ever-changing moods. A graduate of Falmouth College of Arts, James has forged a diverse and successful career, blending his passion for the ocean with his expertise in illustration, fine art, and design.

Although James enjoys the variety that working across different genres offers, he admits that landscapes remain his preferred form. His landscapes, characterised by a contemporary interpretation of classic scenes, employ vibrant and bold colours to promote positivity and create a sense of wellbeing.

At the core of James’ work is his deep connection to the Channel Islands, particularly its dramatic seascapes. His art seeks to evoke the dynamic emotions of island life, exploring themes of tranquillity, drama, and ferocity. James captures both the raw power and the delicate beauty of nature, making his work both visually striking and deeply emotive.

Vista marks a significant moment in James’ career, as the exhibition will showcase a selection of new works inspired by iconic Jersey landmarks. From detailed ocean studies to atmospheric island landscapes, visitors will be transported into the heart of the Channel Islands. For the first time in Jersey, the public will have the opportunity to acquire original pieces from James’ personal collection, including prints and limited-edition canvases. This exhibition provides a rare glimpse into James’ creative process, highlighting his deepening exploration of island life and the ocean’s influence on his art.

This new exhibition reflects James’ ongoing evolution as an artist, drawing from the deep well of emotions stirred by the sea and island landscapes. In his own words: “I’m obsessed with the sea and its moods. My art is an attempt to amplify the experiences of island life, to evoke not just the scenery but the emotions behind it. Each piece is a study of how nature shapes us and how we connect with it.”

To compliment James’ paintings we also have works by Jersey’s new Instagram sensation Elinor Bray.  Elinor is a Jersey-based artist specialising in bespoke landscape paintings designed to elevate luxury interiors, of which Jersey has many.  A qualified Lawyer, Elinor had a change in career direction when her young son was born.  Painting allows Elinor time to spend raising her son.

Elinor now channels her passion for art into creating refined, custom pieces that bring the natural beauty of the Channel Islands into elegant living spaces.

Jaro are partnering with Livingroom, as exhibition sponsor.  Simon Torode, Founder and CEO of Livingroom, said: “Supporting this exhibition is a natural fit for Livingroom. We are passionate about integrating art into living spaces and committed to making it accessible to the community. It is fantastic to champion James as a local Channel Islands artist and we would encourage everyone to visit JARO to experience his art first hand. We look forward to working with more local creatives in the future.”
