Valuing neurodiversity in the workplace
Join Jersey’s Institute of Directors for this panel discussion where we explore the benefits of valuing neurodiversity in the workplace.
Neurodiversity refers to the different ways the brain can work and interpret information. It highlights that people naturally think about things differently. We have different interests and motivations, and are naturally better at some things and poorer at others. Most people are neurotypical, meaning that the brain functions and processes information in the way society expects.
However it is estimated that around one in seven people and more than one million people (more than 15 per cent of people in the UK) are neurodivergent, meaning that the brain functions, learns and processes information differently. Neurodivergence includes a range of conditions including Attention Deficit Disorders, Autism, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia.
The panel discussion will explore how to progress neurodiversity in the workplace to create a better working experience for employees and outcomes for employers.
Panel members include:
- Daniel Read – Partner leading Walkers’ Jersey Employment Law Practice Group
- Dean Lowe – Employment Coordinator, Jersey Employment Trust
- Helen Allenet – Senior Funds Analyst, Ocorian
- Ruth Smith – Specialist teacher and consultant in specific learning difficulties (with a particular interest in dyslexia).
Daniel Read, the Partner leading Walkers’ Jersey Employment Law Practice Group, said: “At Walkers we recognise both the need for and importance of diversity in its many forms, including diversity in thinking. We established a Diversity and Inclusion Committee not only to make our working environment a welcoming place where everyone feels respected, but also so that we can create a workplace that maximises everyone’s talents. We are delighted therefore to be sponsoring this event and sharing what we’ve learned.”
