The Big Skipton Sleep Out
On Friday 24 January 2025, Skipton will host a sponsored charity ‘sleep out’, with all funds raised going directly to Caritas. All money raised will go towards the development of Caritas’ innovative new modular housing solution, creating a community for those experiencing homelessness in the Bailiwick and restoring their dignity as they get back on their feet. Caritas requires £1m to turn this idea into a reality and build the first 12 modular houses.
And here’s how you can help! We need you to spend the night experiencing what it’s like to sleep rough. You’ll be able to bring your own blankets and sleeping bags but will endure the weather outside for the night, with only external shelter like gazebos to keep you dry. This is the reality many of the 1,000 people estimated to be homeless on Guernsey are living with as they take shelter in bunkers, in cars, and other public spaces during the winter months.
Take on the challenge on your own or grab a group of friends or family members and bring the ‘gang’ along for a night under the stars. You can help make a difference for people experiencing the hardship of homelessness on Guernsey. It can often be an invisible problem, so The Big Skipton Sleep Out aims to demonstrate the harsh reality of homelessness. Skipton believes that everyone deserves a home of their own, and this community event will be one big step in that direction.
Arrival is between 7pm and 10pm, where you will sign in, hand over your sponsorship money, and find a space for the night – there will be gazebos, the Pavilion changing rooms and benches – wherever you think will be best. Please bring water and snacks – strictly no alcohol. There is a water fountain, and hot drinks will be available all night. Complimentary bacon (and vegan) rolls will be served bright and early at 5am, and we respectfully request that everyone clears their rubbish and departs the KGV by 6.30am. The organising team will give you an update on the total amount you have raised before departure.
