Sunset Walk 2025

Guernsey’s Breast Cancer Charity, The Pink Ladies, is preparing for the 10th anniversary of their Sunset Walk on Saturday, 28th June.

The walk first launched in 2007 – twenty years ago and takes place biennially. On average, around 1500 participants take part each year, raising awareness of the charity and fundraising to support those affected by breast cancer in the Bailiwick of Guernsey. This year, for the 10th walk, we hope to attract 2000 walkers, beating our record and making this milestone one to remember.

The walk will take place on 28th June:

  • Full 13 mile route starts at Grandes Rocques at 5.30pm
  • Shorter 3 mile route starts at Bordeaux at 6.45pm
  • Warm up sessions at each starting point
  • Big Pink Party at Market Square with The Big Band Collective until 11pm

Looking back over the 10 walks, we’ve seen friends, family, and corporate groups come together, dressed in pink, to support this fantastic cause. Just like Fran Torode who has taken part in every single walk and has all her medals along with lots of photos to prove it.

Fran Torode said: “I take part every year because it’s fun and supports a great cause; seeing the ribbon of pink clad walkers along the coast is an awe-inspiring sight. A couple of my best memories include achieving my fastest time in the pouring rain – I was soaked to the skin – and walking alongside an actual horse in a pink tutu! It truly is a fabulous occasion.”

It’s not just the dedicated regulars that the event attracts, but also first-time walkers like Gemma Ainger who was diagnosed last year with an aggressive form of stage 3 breast cancer at age 42, who will be walking with over 20 of her friends and family.

Gemma Ainger, Breast Cancer Warrior added: “Last year my life was turned upside down. The hardest part of all that’s happened to me is moving on from the fact that if I’d been paying attention to my body, its highly likely I would have caught my breast cancer earlier. If it wasn’t for my amazing support network of family and friends, my breast cancer journey would be so much harder. I’ll be walking the 10th Sunset Walk, a year after I discovered a lump, with so many of my biggest supporters, and I can’t wait, it’s going to be very emotional for me, that’s for sure.”

Experiences such as Gemma’s has led to the Pink Ladies introducing a new area of focus for their work this year. While supporting those affected remains at the heart of what they do, they will now also be working on encouraging islanders to take a pro-active role in their breast health. Evolving the charities’ purpose to include emphasis the importance of early detection through dedicated awareness campaigns and community engagement, helping to empower individuals to take charge of their breast health.

Naomi Leach, Pink Ladies Chair said: “I am grateful to continue the work of the original committee and look forward to supporting more people across the Bailiwick through their breast cancer journey. As the Pink Ladies Guernsey approaches its 25th year, we are so looking forward to celebrating with friends and supporters of the charity at our tenth Sunset Walk, which is always a wonderful opportunity to celebrate life and living. Come and join us and help turn Guernsey’s coastline pink for the tenth time.”
