Sark to Commemorate Liberation 80 with historic celebrations
The Island of Sark is proud to share a vibrant and heartfelt programme of events to mark the 80th Anniversary of Liberation from German Occupation during the Second World War.
Taking place from 8th to 11th May 2025, the celebrations will blend solemn remembrance with joyful festivities, honouring the resilience and spirit of the Sark community.
Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal will visit the island as part of the commemorations and celebrations, where she will meet with residents. Her presence underscores the national significance of this milestone in Sark’s wartime history. In addition, the island will also be joined by Mr Jean Morin, President of the Department of La Manche in Normandy, further strengthening the historical and cultural ties between Sark and its neighbours in France.
Highlights of the Liberation 80 programme include:
- Thursday 8th May – VE Day. The lighting of the VE Day Beacon at Pilcher’s Monument will align with similar events across the UK. A symbolic procession of the flame to Sark Prison will mark the beginning of the weekend’s commemorations.
- Saturday 10th May – The Avenue. The day begins with a chance to meet the Chelsea Pensioners and Gurkhas, followed by the unveiling of the 80th Liberation Plaque. A street party, traditional performances, and interactive events including a Kukri Knife demonstration and games on the Avenue Green will capture the community spirit of Liberation Day.
- Sunday 11th May – Millennium Field. A cavalcade to St. Peter’s Church and Millennium Field starts the day with guests encouraged to dress up and participate. Afternoon events include a school Liberation display, theatre sketch ‘The Dame of Sark’, and a special screening of ‘Appointment with Venus’ – a film set during the German occupation of Sark.
Sark’s Liberation 80 events are not only a tribute to the past but a celebration of peace, unity, and enduring freedom. The entire community and visitors are invited to join in this significant occasion.
