Rotary Centenary Environmental Action Summit

The Rotary Club of Jersey will celebrate its centenary anniversary by looking to the future as it hosts the Centenary Environment Action Summit on 5th October 2024.

The event, which will be hosted at the Grand Hotel, will be opened by Deputy Steve Luce, Minster for the Environment, and include local and global expert speakers, including founder and chairman of Jersey Marine Conservation, Kevin McIlwee. Further topics will include green investment, the circular economy and reductions in plastic.

“One of the largest charities in the world, the Rotary Foundation has always been committed to making a difference. With climate change being one of the most pressing challenges facing us at the moment we thought the environment was a fitting topic as we mark 100 years of Rotary,” said Toni Roberts MBE, Environmental and Foundation Lead for the club.

As part of the celebrations, the Rotary Club of Jersey has also sponsored a school project in Rwanda through Hands Around the World and has supported many local Charities including Every Child Our Future, the Royals RFC, Brightly and Brighter Futures through its Centenary Community Fund.

Since its inception, the club has been involved in local initiatives such as the environmental restoration project at Les Mielles, Porridge Day, and the Good Companions Club and has also supported international efforts in fighting polio and providing disaster relief.

“Our environment action summit dovetails with our other initiatives in that a healthy environment is key to being able to support projects and initiatives which benefit the community and we’re very grateful to the speakers and our sponsor, Ravenscroft, who have helped make this event possible,” said Toni Roberts.

“As an investment company we look at global matters on a day-to-day basis and the environment forms a big part of this. As a small island, we’re not immune to global issues and we all have a part to play. I’m looking forward to being on the panel for this event and hearing from the other experts as to what we can do on a local level,” said Shannon Lancaster, strategy lead for the Ravenscroft Global Solutions Fund.

The summit is open to the public and will include interactive discussions, with the audience encouraged to ask questions during panel discussions at the end of each session.
