Purpose: A Wellbeing economies film

Guernsey has always adapted when times change, and now, many islanders are feeling it’s time to evolve again. This small but mighty island has a unique opportunity to lead the way toward something truly transformative.

Could it be time to rethink how we define success and build a future that prioritises the quality of life for our islanders over endless consumption.

Could it be time to play to our strengths, set our own rules, and break free from being beholden to the mainstream geopolitical theatre and failing global economic ideologies. What matters is what CAN happen when we choose to play our own game, to write our own rules, when we realise no one is going to save us? We must save ourselves.

The UK, US and others are showing us where our current path is heading. But maybe we don’t want to follow that path. Maybe we are the ones we’ve been looking for. Maybe we just need an island-wide economic system that serves our islanders.

Maybe all we need is a wellbeing economy, fit for purpose and fit for Guernsey!

On April 1st, we’re hosting a special screening of Purpose – A Wellbeing Economies Film, an invitation to reimagine what an economy designed for people—not just GDP—could look like for Guernsey.

This is a chance to reflect and rethink our current way of life. We need to ask some questions. Questions that might make us uncomfortable, questions we’ve all been avoiding.

A wellbeing economy, where wealth is shared more fairly and planetary boundaries are respected, is no longer just an ideal—it’s an urgent requirement. Yet our current economic ideologies, things we’ve inherited, hold us back.

But why a film? Because film has the power to challenge, to inspire, and to spark conversation. This isn’t just about watching something and walking away—it’s about engaging with the ideas, confronting the uncomfortable truths, and opening ourselves to the possibilities of a new future. After the screening, you’ll hear from the film’s director and join a Guernsey panel discussion where you can ask the hard questions, share your thoughts, and challenge your own perspectives.

We’re not asking you to take our word for it, we’re asking you to be curious. This is about shaping a new path for Guernsey, one that focuses on wellbeing, sustainability, and fairness for generations to come. It’s a chance for us to lead, not follow, to step out of our short-term cycles of fixing one problem only to create another and to build a long-term, sustainable economic system that serves the people of our island, not the other way around.
