Nowhere Less Now exhibition

The first major exhibition to take place at ArtHouse Jersey at Capital House in 2025 will be UK-based artists Lindsay Seers and Keith Sargent’s ambitious immersive installation Nowhere Less Now.

From Thursday 30 January 2025 the exhibition space will be completely transformed into the upturned hull of a ship and will invite people to enter a haunting exploration of time and memory. This incredible artwork considers how history is both created and perceived. ArtHouse Jersey will present the eighth chapter of this episodic work after previous episodes have featured at London’s Hayward Gallery at the Southbank Centre, Whitechapel Gallery as well as appearing at major galleries and museums in Sharjah, Tasmania, Swansea and Margate, to date.

The work was premiered at the Kilburn Tin Tabernacle in 2012 as a special site-specific installation by Artangel, one of the UK’s most pioneering contemporary art organisations. This edition for Jersey is presented in association with Artangel and will run until Sunday 9 March 2025.

Themes of Nowhere Less Now

This extraordinary artwork draws connections between a 19th century Tin Tabernacle chapel in London, the birth of Seer’s great great uncle, George Edwards, the birth of Mina Bergson, artist and sister of French philosopher Henri Bergson, and Seer’s own birth exactly 100 years later to the day. For this Jersey iteration, Seers and Sargent have also created a series of new films specific to Jersey and which focus on the historical moments of the German Occupation, the Jersey Witch Trials and the redeeming love of surrealist artists Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore.

Combining photography, performance, video and animation, Nowhere Less Now is symptomatic of Seers and Sargent’s relentless search for truths that remain elusive as they slip through the lens.

Nowhere Less Now is part of The Artangel Collection, an initiative to bring outstanding film and video works, commissioned and produced by Artangel, to galleries and museums across the UK. The Artangel Collection has been developed in partnership with Tate, is generously supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and The Foyle Foundation and uses public funding from Arts Council England.

Head of Programme for ArtHouse Jersey, James Tyson, said: “Nowhere Less Now offers to bring you into a space where everything is moving and the dreamlike visions of the artists are brought to life like a strange, beguiling journey. We are delighted to have brought this latest iteration of this fascinating, immersive project to Jersey after its previous versions at major art museums and galleries internationally.”

Artists Lindsay Seers and Keith Sargent, said: “Nowhere Less Now was originally conceived in 2012 after 2 years of extensive research in archives around the world. We are now in our 8th iteration of this work. The ship (HMS Kingfisher) that inspired our work was built in the port’s dock which is visible from the windows of our house on the Isle of Sheppey. We have a photograph of my great-great-uncle George who was on an anti-slaving mission. I found him in the National archive at Kew. The venues have been extraordinary – including a Googie building complete with a dancing alien in a country that has banned dancing.

“This last version is unclad and the bare bones of the ship’s hull hold the work in multiple projections and soundscapes. This is Nowhere Less Now’s final outing disembarking at Jersey, an end of a 15 year journey.”
