Navy to Victory event
Following the success of the Jersey Aero Club Open Day this month, we are inviting club members, aviation enthusiasts, historians and families alike to step back in history as the Jersey Aero Club proudly hosts an exclusive ticketed event to visit and explore this flying museum!
The Douglas R4D is the naval version of the iconic aircraft more commonly known as the C-47 Skytrain, used by the USAAF and Dakota by the RAF. It was used by the US Navy during the Second World War for long-range maritime duties and anti-submarine warfare.
Built in 1944, ‘Ready 4 Duty’ was delivered to the U.S. Navy Atlantic Special Service Squadron and was used for airborne search and radar. It contributed to the sinking of a German U-boat in February 1945 and is the last of its kind still flying. ‘Ready 4 Duty’ is maintained and operated by the Dallas / Fort Worth Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. Quotes:
Nigel Hall, Chairman of Jersey Aero Club said: “We are excited to offer our members and the public the opportunity to get up close to a piece of flying history. Whilst the DC3 aircraft played a part in Jersey’s connectivity through until the late 70s, the wonderful team of the Commemorative Air Force will be opening up this varient of the aircraft to show people around the outside as well as a chance to visit the cockpit of this legendary aircraft.”
Christopher Volpe, Wing Leader for ‘Ready 4 Duty’, Commemorative Air Force said: “With the youngest WWII veterans ninety-seven years old, the window to honour these men and women is closing quicky. Navy to Victory is our way to help them take flight one more time.”
David Oliver, President / CEO of Commemorative Air Force added: “The Navy to Victory Tour is a heartfelt tribute to the countless Allied sailors and airmen, who served with courage and conviction during the Second World War. This commemorative mission embodies the transatlantic bonds forged in the fight for freedom and remain a cornerstone in our shared history.”
