Mixtape art exhibition

‘Mixtape’: Cutting, scratching, mixing, sampling and blending art from 1980’s to current day

Cutting, scratching, mixing, sampling and blending Pop Art, Graffiti, Street Art, Graphic Art and Fine Art from the 1980’s to the current day.

On Friday 24th March at 5pm Private & Public Gallery will launch a large-scale urban art survey exhibition the likes of which will have never been seen before in the Channel Islands.

Comprising of 120 works by 40 artists such as Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Banksy ‘Mixtape’ pays homage to the monumental moments from the worlds of pop art, graffiti, street art and hip-hop and reflects upon the influence these artists have had on subsequent generations of fashion designers, DJ’s, film makers, photographers and artists.

Whether spray painting directly onto walls, social activism or political rebellion anti-establishment thinking and creativity was at the heart of one of the most influential cultural movements on the last half century.

Mixtape is a giant salon hang exhibition which in many ways provides the soundtrack of our lives and examines how these cultural narratives shifted the public’s perception of underground art and culture leading to a global creative revolution in art, music and fashion.

Both educational and entertaining, Mixtape is a celebration of popular cultures core ethos of an innate desire for mark making and challenging authority. By its nature pop art and graffiti is ephemeral, its own existence is temporary, but the culture and its rebellious spirit has made a profound impact upon millions of people around the world.

Gallery Director Chris Clifford says: “Mixtape is a survey exhibition which brings together some of the greatest artists from the 80’s, 90’s and new millennia in a mixtape of visual richness which is graphical in style and as clean cut as a breakbeat mix. Blending the Pop Art of Warhol and Haring with the Street Art of Banksy will provide an analogue perspective on the digital age.

“In many ways curating this exhibition has been like making a 1980’s mixtape whereby I’ve had to consider the transitions between songs, the effects caused by juxtaposing a soft song with a loud song, and the overall “narrative arc” of the entire tape. It’s a visually arresting, very cool and rebellious exhibition so I hope you will pay us a visit”.

Simon Silbernagl of exhibition sponsors Style Homes says: “Style Homes are delighted to be supporting this exhibition, celebrating some of the best artists from the 80’s, 90’s and new millennia.

“It’s fantastic to have the opportunity to view such an inspiring and eclectic collection in a gallery onisland, with pieces by world renowned artists such as Damien Hirst and Andy Warhol. As a local business, we are thrilled to see many Jersey artists celebrated here as well, contributing to the diverse cultural references of this exhibition.”
